The Chairman's Letter
by Paul Burnett
As published in the July 2013 magazine
Since my last letter I can report that your committee held it’s annual full day meeting in London on the 26th January. We were pleased to welcome Tony Williams to our committee. Tony, as you may know, has visited Pitcairn and enjoys a serious interest in both Pitcairn and Norfolk Islands. We feel sure that he will be a tremendous asset to our committee.
Amongst matters discussed was a redesigned badge for the UK chapter. Designs for the badge were put forward by John Smith, Felix Driver and by our President Jennifer Toombs. A consensus was reached and Jennifer agreed to refine the ideas and the new badge cleverly incorporates the Norfolk Island pine and the Bounty. The badge now appears on our letterheads and within our website and replaces the earlier PISG badge although the original will remain in use by our parent group.
On the 13th March, Felix Driver, David Sleep, Tony Williams and myself attended a meeting of The British Overseas Territories All Parliamentary Group hosted by Andrew Rosindell M.P. at Portcullis House, London. Amongst presentations at the meeting were two concerning Pitcairn. The first, ably introduced by David Sleep and very well presented by Tony and Felix updated those attending about the Society. The other, an excellent presentation on the proposed Pitcairn Marine Protected Area was given on behalf of the PEW Environment Trust by Alistair Gammell and Elizabeth Whitebread. Though the attendance was slightly disappointing we were pleased to have had the chance to promote Pitcairn and we are indebted to Andrew for the opportunity.
The Spring meeting on the 23rd March was a big success. A splendid film 'Take Me to Pitcairn' telling of Julian McDonnell’s adventures and difficulties in getting to Pitcairn was enjoyed by all the members. The humour and the photography was first class. All those at the meeting were complimentary and sales of Julian’s DVD were numerous. The afternoon session included a fascinating illustrated talk My visit to Norfolk Island which was given by Peter Logan. To conclude the afternoon a successful auction was hosted by John Smith and Alan Fillmore.
I wish you all a happy and healthy Summer and I look forward to welcoming existing and new members at our Annual General Meeting on 5th October.
